THE COMMISSIONING - 1 March 2014

“The courage and heroism of the people aboard Flight 93 will never be forgotten and USS Somerset will leave a legacy that will never be forgotten by those wishing to do harm to this country.”
- Secretary of the Navy, Gordon R. England.

The Navy League of the United States, Philadelphia Council thanks all who sponsored, contributed, and worked so hard to make the commissioning of the USS SOMERSET on 1 March 2014 a huge success.

The naval commissioning ceremony has been a tradition of navies since 1775. It is the most significant event in the life of the ship. The commissioning is the final event in the triad that brings a ship to life and marks the entrance of a man-of-war into the naval forces of her nation.

The Philadelphia Council of the Navy League of the United States established the USS SOMERSET Commissioning Committee to raise funds and support the commissioning ceremony at Penn’s Landing and associated events in the Greater Philadelphia region during the week prior to the commissioning. It is NOT too late for you to contribute.
